​Phil and Mary were both born in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent most of their lives there. Married in 1961, they have two grown sons and one grandson. After many years, they made Blairsville, Georgia their home.

Like many young couples, Phil and Mary got off to a rough start. They were young when they married, and those early years were not easy. In 1968, they both came to know Christ—a turning point that changed everything. It was then they began to recognize how much they needed to grow, both personally and in their marriage.

During one particularly difficult season, they came to a simple but life-changing realization: God had a greater plan for their lives than simply getting by. From that point on, they began pursuing His design for their marriage—to reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church.

Over time, and often one issue at a time, God brought growth, healing, and clarity. What began as a personal journey became a growing desire to walk alongside others facing similar struggles.

One small but meaningful part of their story is their long-standing commitment to a weekly date night—something they have maintained for years. It’s a simple practice, but one they believe has played an important role in keeping their relationship strong and intentional.

With well over 100 combined years of marriage and more than 75 years in ministry, Phil and Mary bring both experience and humility to the work they do. In 1987, they founded Safe Place Ministries, convinced there was more to the Christian life than simply going through the motions.

Since then, their passion has been to help others discover the life Jesus described in John 10:10—life that is full, meaningful, and overflowing.

Today, they continue to wake up each morning grateful for the opportunity to walk with others as God brings them.
